At first the story made me feel intrigued. I thought it would be about a farm animal dying or her getting lost in the forest. The story at the beginning made me feel happy and wish that it was Summer time but at the end I felt a bit confused about how the story turned so dark so quickly. I felt sad and had to re-read the end over a few times to get the full effect of what happened. The beginning of the story reminded me of when I was a little kid running around outside playing with sticks, climbing trees and wondering around until it became dark.
In "Flowers" Walker creates an atmosphere that is joyful and warm feeling. She creates this happy feeling in order to make a dramatic ending to when Myop stumbles upon the man with the noose. By Walker describing how beautiful the Summer day was and how Myop was having such a great time of being outside. Myop playing in the hen house, pig pen, and down at the stream Walker can make a drastic change in the readers mood when she talks about the deceased man. Of course one would feel empathy when Walker describes the dead man and the noose but by Walker getting the reader emotionally involved the impact of sadness is much greater. Going from happy to sad or depressed suddenly can make one feel the one emotion more intensely and that was what Walker achieved by creating two separate atmospheres of scenery.
When I read this story my mind created a very visual picture of scenery. I imagined the fields, flowers, ferns and animals. It made me want it to be Summer time and be able to go outside to enjoy the sun. This joyful feeling in the end made me more sad when Myop came across the man. That's just how it made me feel. What about you?
It really reminded me about "Of Mice and Men", a tragic story that might have turned out so well. This story was really sad and emotionally impacting. The way the author draws out happiness and thoughts of Summer really do make the story even more tragic. Nice post.
ReplyDeleteThe ending made me feel as though Myop has forever left her own little world of picking flowers and playing with chickens; by entering into the cove Myop enters the real world where things are both good and bad. Such as the pink rose and a part of the noose thats underneath it which the man killed himself with. It was sad to see the main character's own world unravel and wither away as soon as she enters into the dark cove. On an additional note, I do admire her courage of not being scared of the skeleton, I most certainly would!

ReplyDeleteI was unsure on the ending of this story. The last line was "And the summer was over." I wasn't sure if that meant Myop had ended up dying or if it was just a horrific unfortunate event that she had to see. I didn't know if it meant "summer" representing cheerfulness was "over" has in it coming to a halt to her joy and happiness after seeing a dead man. I was very unclear on the ending. I didn't know what to infer. I guess Walker wanted everyone to interpret it in their own way by making up their own ending as to what the last line meant.
